Sturgeons are long-lived, late-maturing fishes with distinctive characteristics, such as a heterocercal caudal fin similar to those of sharks, and an elongated, spindle-like body that is smooth-skinned, scaleless, and armored with five lateral rows of bony plates called scutes. Sturgeon, any of about 29 species of fishes of the family Acipenseridae (subclass Chondrostei), native to temperate waters of the Northern Hemisphere. Most species live in the ocean and ascend rivers to spawn in spring or summer; a few others are confined to fresh water. Sturgeons are an ancient group of bony fish characterized by their elongated, scaleless bodies, partially covered by rows of bony plates called scutes. They belong to the family Acipenseridae, within the order Acipenseriformes and the class Actinopterygii. Atlantic sturgeon live in rivers and coastal waters from Canada to Florida. Hatched in the freshwater of rivers, Atlantic sturgeon transition to the marine environment, and return to their birthplace to spawn, or lay eggs, when they reach adulthood. Of 27 species of sturgeon found worldwide, the five species listed here have been submitted to the IGFA for world-record status. Of these five, all but one are found in North America. Sturgeons (family Acipenseridae) are ancient ray-finned fishes characterized by a largely cartilaginous skeleton, bony scutes (armor-like plates), a protrusible tube-like mouth, and sensory barbels used to locate prey on the bottom. Atlantic sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus) is one of the largest and longest-lived anadromous fish in North America.
