Prichard began as a settlement in the 1830s, bordering Telegraph Road (known now as U.S. Highway 43). In 1879, Cleveland Prichard purchased the land from the original owners with the hopes of establishing a livestock and vegetable farming center that would supply other regions of the country with fresh early vegetables. It was named for Cleveland Prichard, who purchased a tract of land (1879) on the east side of the Mobile and Ohio Railroad track and developed it into a vegetable-shipping point for markets in the North and East. Harold Prichard was the acknowledged leader of a group of moral philosophers who worked together in Oxford between the two World Wars, and which included W. D. Ross, E. F.
